About Peter Steckler, Esq.

I have been helping people to deal with their debt problems for more than forty years. The bankruptcy laws allow people to cancel their debts in most cases, or at least to reduce them to manageable amounts. I don’t do credit counseling, and I don’t negotiate with your creditors. I just make them go away. I am a “debt relief agent” as defined in the United States Bankruptcy Code.

Most people who file a bankruptcy petition get to keep their property, including their houses, cars, personal possessions, pensions, and even their businesses, if they have one. I have represented many business owners, and most of them are still in business. If you have a house, chances are good that you can keep it. If you are in foreclosure, bankruptcy will stop that - maybe for good. If your wages are being garnished or your bank account restrained, bankruptcy can stop those, too.

Filing bankruptcy does not destroy your credit forever. If your credit score is bad now, bankruptcy will frequently raise it by about a hundred points. This is because your debts are gone, you should be able to pay your bills on time, and you have learned some hard lessons about managing your money. I have seen my clients get car loans and home mortgages in less than a year after filing.

You may have heard that bankruptcy was made more difficult by recent changes in the law. This is not really so. The paperwork has become more complex, but that is my problem, not yours. Experienced attorneys, like me, have had little trouble with these changes. Many lawyers who filed only a few cases each year have dropped out. More people have filed bankruptcy each year under the new law than under the old.

I don’t represent lenders and other creditors. I don’t represent big businesses. I handle bankruptcy cases for consumer debtors - individuals and husbands and wives, who can file a joint petition at no additional cost. Whatever financial crisis you are in, chances are that I have resolved it many times before. Bankruptcy is not the only thing that I do, but I have done many of them over the years, and I am sure that I can help you. By asking you a few questions, I can tell you in a minute or two, in my office or over the phone, what filing bankruptcy in your particular situation could do for you. Why don’t you call me now. If I am here, I will personally answer your call.

I represent clients in Rockland, Orange W estchester, Dutchess, Ulster, Putnam and Sullivan Counties, and in the five boroughs of New York City. I have also handled bankruptcy cases in New Jersey and Connecticut.  My office is in New City, Rockland County, N.Y.
